A Reminiscence of San Diego from Yeosu.. Now this is where it starts.

San Diego! It makes me feel elated when this name comes around.
San Diego is a naval base located on the southern California and very well-known place to naval veterans as well as the seniors for enjoying the last years of their lives.
With its shiny weather in all seasons and its great sceneries with picturesque beaches near the downtown, this city is not too much to be the object of envy to all those retired.
This city is simply a paradise to those who love to enjoy the last time of their lives.
I took a master course in San Diego and spent my ‘hottest’ days as a salaryman here from 2006 to 2009.
Korean students studying in San Diego at that time were either highly exceptional talents or from rich families. University of California in San Diego(UCSD) was the favorite to most talented Korean students as it is one of the top schools that also have rich sponsors.
I was not the person in that league as I was an ordinary person and was not rich at all. (If I were rich, I would not need to study there. Rather I would be there for having fun definitely.)
Considering all the circumstances I got, I went to San Diego State University(SDSU) as my major graduate program was way better than that of UCSD and it was cheaper. Non-comparative to these two great schools in San Diego, I have my pride undaunted.
Life in San Diego was the toughest time in my 47 years but it was the experience that I could never forget till I die.
I was just a stranger from an uninformed city named Yeosu from South Korea. Even Koreans residing in the city didn’t know where the city is.
I had an ardent desire. Hanging out over 16 hours a day, I had San Diegans in my daily life and experience what it had to be as a resident of the city.
I had come close to them with my sincerity. The wisdom and values of life that I gained from them was the utmost yield that nothing could substitute to during my time in San Diego.
After having 1 year of my doctoral program at Florida State University from 2010 to 2011, I came back home in 2012 which was the year that Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea was held.
As a Yeosu native, I stepped into phase two of my life.
After spending several years abroad, I found Yeosu just another San Diego to me.
At that moment, I felt a reminiscence of San Diego in Yeosu. What a great transition it has been... It was a huge transition of my old town.
Dramatic changes in nature! I was quite astonished by the change of a small fishing port city in the south to have grown as an international city of marine tourism.
And 8 years have passed and I still don’t forget.
Compared to San Diego, Yeosu is not competitive in general but comparative on the marine resources and its potential to develop.
And again, 8 years have passed since I became a chief officer(English interpreter) in Yeosu City government.
Through the world exposition in 2012, Yeosu has achieved its development so fast which could have taken over 20~30 years.
I really appreciate that I have had a great opportunity to work for the internationalization of my city, Yeosu.
In the past, Yeosu was once called as 'Korea's Naples' as it preserves unique marine ecology and environment and its magnificent ocean scenic views.
I assume that the cities near Gwangyang bay area have a similarity to San Diego as each has its uniqueness such as magnificent coasts, maritime logistics, and marine tourism.
By analyzing and proposing success cases in San Diego, I would love to do much to help the growth of Gwangyang bay area including my city, Yeosu.
My article will be published both in English and in Korean to make it public worldwide.
Also, I assume that all my writings would not be always fun to read but it could be at least a space to share my thought to you and to communicate with you to consider our local development.
You know a proverb that “if there is a will, there is the way.” I wish that our tiny effort to change will be a touchstone to draw our local development and go further to open a new era in Korea.

샌디에고! 그 이름만 들어도 아드레날린이 솟구쳐 오른다.
샌디에고는 미국 캘리포니아주 남부에 위치한 군항 도시다. 미 해군 퇴역자들뿐만 아니라, 노후 안식처로 익히 알려진 도시다.
사시사철 화사한 날씨와 도심에서 그리 멀지 않은 곳에 그림 같은 해변들이 펼쳐지는 풍경은 세상 모든 은퇴자의 선망의 대상이라 표현해도 지나치지 않을 듯싶다.
은퇴자와 황혼의 여유를 만끽하려는 이들에겐 지상낙원일 터이다.
필자는 지난 2006년부터 2009년까지 이곳에서 석사과정을 마쳤다. 그리고 샐러리맨으로서 소위 ‘핫’한 젊은 시절을 보냈다.
당시 유학생들은 대부분 부유하거나 특출난 인재들이 주류를 이뤘다. 학비를 가정으로부터 지원받거나 장학금을 받기에 유리한 UCSD 계열을 다니는 학생들이 많았다.
여건이 충분했던 그들에 비해 필자는 경제적 여건이 그리 녹록지는 않았다.
때문에 상대적으로 학비가 저렴한 SDSU를 선택했다. 그래도 캘리포니아에선 여느 학교에 내놔도 손색이 없는 학교며, 필자의 자부심은 변함이 없다.
샌디에고 생활은 필자의 마흔일곱 인생 가운데 가장 힘들었지만 잊지 못할 시절이다.
필자는 한국의 작은 도시 여수라는 잘 알려지지 않은 도시에서 온 이방인에 불과했다.
절실했다. 하루 16시간을 샌디에고 주민들과 몸을 부대끼면서 그들의 삶을 몸소 겪었다.
마음으로 그들에게 다가갔고, 그들에게서 느낀 삶의 지혜와 인생의 가치관은 유학 생활 무엇보다 바꿀 수 없는 큰 수확이었다.
2010년과 2011년 미국 플로리다 주립대에서 박사과정 1년차를 지내고 필자는 여수세계박람회가 열리던 해인 지난 2012년 귀향했다.
여수 토박이로 제2의 인생길을 걷게 됐다. 수년 만에 마주한 여수는 전혀 낯설지 않은 또 하나의 샌디에고였다.
필자는 당시 여수에서 샌디에고의 진한 향수를 느낄 수 있었다.
태어나서 십수 년 넘게 살아왔던 내 고향이 이렇게 변모했다니…
상전벽해. 남해안의 조그마한 어촌 도시가 이렇게 전 세계 해양관광 중심 도시로 성장했다는 사실에 감개무량했다.
그리고 8년이 지난 지금 역시 그때의 감격을 잊지 못한다.
여수는 샌디에고와는 분명 차이가 있지만 해양 관광자원, 발전 가능성에 있어선 샌디에고와 어깨를 견줄 만 하다.
여수시 전문 통역관으로 활동한 지도 어느덧 8년이라는 세월이 흘렀다.
박람회 개최를 통해 여수는 적어도 20~30년에 달하는 발전을 아주 짧은 기간 동안 당겼다.
그러한 여수의 세계화, 국제화를 위해 필자가 일할 수 있다는 사실에 더없는 고마움을 느낀다.
과거 여수는 한국의 나폴리, 베네치아라는 별칭도 있었다. 물론 세계적으로도 진귀한 해양생태환경과 해양경관 덕분이었을 것이다.
필자는 아름다운 해안과 해상물류, 해양관광 등 각기 장점을 가진 광양만권의 도시들이 샌디에고와 흡사하다고 판단된다.
그리고, 샌디에고의 사례를 분석하고 제안하여 여수를 포함해 광양만권 성장에 조금이나마 보탬이 되려 한다.
필자의 모든 글은 한글과 동시에 영문으로 번역돼 전 세계에 제공될 것이다.
물론 필자의 모든 글이 늘 재미있고 흥미로운 이야기가 될 수는 없겠지만, 적어도 필자의 생각을 독자와 공유할 수 있고, 지역발전을 모색하는 작은 소통의 창구가 됐으면 한다.
뜻이 있는 곳에 길이 있다는 속담이 있다. 나와 우리의 작은 변화의 시도가 지역사회 발전을 넘어서 새로운 대한민국을 여는 시금석이 되길 기대해 본다.
